History

Fort Bend County was originally home to the Karankawa Indians and was known as Fort Bend and Fort Settlement.  Fort Bend County was created in 1837, from parts of Harris, Brazoria and Austin counties. Sugar and cotton were transported to the Port of Galveston from Richmond, a prosperous trade center, on the Brazos River. Oil and gas were discovered at Blueridge, Orchard, Thompsons and Katy in the 1920’s. Production still continues in several areas of Fort Bend County. Fort Bend County has a rich history with many museums, historic sites and structures.
